Should the articles be there?

Hi. Please help. (1) Which is correct? Let's say the father and the son are talking. The father asks the son whether he wants to go out, but he says he is sick. Could the father say this? The last time (Last time??) You said you had a backache and couldn't go out. (2) What is the difference? We should appreciate each other's differences because they are things (the things??) that make each person unique. Thank you in advance.

(1) Both are possible; without the article is informal. (2) There is no difference in meaning or intent. One speaker's unconscious recognizes the specificity of 'things' sooner than the other's, that is all.

We should appreciate each other's differences because they are things (the things??) that make each person unique.

And this:

We should appreciate the gesture because they are (1) gifts Mr. John Doe brought us (2) the gifts Mr. John Doe b

Hi. Thank you, again. Please help me further. For this, let us move the part "Last time" or "The last time" to the end of the sentence. If I am not mistaken, I think we use the phrase "last time" more than the phrase "the last time" when it has to come at the end of the sentence. Why is that? Also could we say the same for the phrases "next time" and "the next time" ("next time" being informal and

The position of the phrase makes no difference in my estimation. The same applies to 'next'.
