Should "thank" be in upper case?

Our form teacher encourages us to say “thank you” to our parents to show appreciation to them for doing things for us.

I think that there are a certain number of expressions with 'say' (say hello, say goodbye, say thank you, say sorry) that do not require quotation marks; they do not require capital letters. However, if you put the words after 'say' in quotation marks, we now have direct speech; the first word should begin with a capital letter.
