SHOULD SCIENCE REPLACE ARTS AND HUMANITIES?

Since science and technology are becoming more and more important in modern society, schools should spend more time on teaching these subjects rather than on arts and humanities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The discussions about subjects at school, beyond dispute, cannot be regarded as new, but a good few people, especially schoolchildren and educators, still express their deep concern about this issue. To make it clearer, one still has yet to come to an agreement on whether more science related subjects should be taught rather than arts and humanities or not since technology is gaining momentum in recent years.

In the first place, those who choose to be all for the aforementioned statement, for definite, can provide the proofs, and the following two facts prove to be fairly common. To my knowledge and to many others’, it is logical to believe that having prior knowledge about science and technology can enable students to look for decent jobs more easily when they graduate. One further mere fact is that hardly many individuals have innate talent for arts and humanities, so it is likely that they may struggle to earn a living as there are many superior employees in the society.

Although the above points can hold good, there are still several drawbacks that should be taken into consideration. The first objection is that technical subjects are not appealing to some students, which can make them fall behind the syllabus or cause boredom, and after that it can make them drop classes. Another argument worth bringing into the equation is that if paying less attention to arts and humanities, students may lack of basic skills such as communication, which amounts to ineffective collaboration with their colleagues.

On the whole, there are not only pluses, but also minuses when arts and humanities give way to science courses. For the reason, it should be concluded that educators and governments should plan reasonable curriculum which is beneficial for students.
