Should it be 'was' and 'lord'?

Nanjo passed away on 8 March 1265. He had been the Lord of Fuji-gun province.

1. Should it be 'was' or 'had been'?
2. Should it be 'lord' instead?

Thanks.

'Daimyo' is in the English dictionary (first recorded in English in 1727), so you may use that word for more accuracy. Also, '-gun' means 'province', so you should omit one or the other.

Both are possible, but I'd use 'had been'.
