Should it be "the" or "a"?

Hi! everyone.
Could you tell me which one should I use in the sentence below?
Thank God! my exams are over. They have been keeping me at the stake for a whole month.
Should I use "for a whole month" or "for the whole month"?
I think in order for "the" to qualify being in the sentence, I will have to specify the month, as in-:for the month of July.(Am I correct to think so?)
So it should be "for a whole month". What do you think?
Thanks!
