It's "pages", but really "pp." in footnotes and the like. The rules for page ranges are rather complicated. Consult a style guide. Chicago wants yours to be "438–39". In everyday prose, I would dispense with the symbol and write "pages 438 and 439". That hyphen is better as an en dash, which you can make on a computer with ALT 0150: "pp. 438–9".
