Should it be "in" or "during"?

FYI- Justarius is the Highmage. Justarius and Dalamar led many of the Conclave wizards in an assault on the fortress, but the Highmage was slain along with most of his fellow mages during/in the fighting.

I like "during," but "in" would not be incorrect

("In" could be interpreted as "fellow mages in the fighting", while "during" clearly means "slain during the fighting.")
