Should I write it as a quotation

When you write something like bite your tongue meaning to keep quiet would it be best to write "bite your tongue" since you don't literally mean it? -or does it matter as long as the sentence in its entirety makes it obvious which bite your tongue you're referring to?

Emotion: smile Thanks, I wish I would have asked first before writing it in a sentence.
