Should I write avenue as "Ave" or "Ave."?

Hi

Suppose I need to write down a address like this: XYZ Avenue, New York.

Should I shorten "Avenue" to "Ave" or "Ave."? I believe that it should be "Ave." because abbreviations almost always end with a period. Thanks.

Ave.
But I have seen it on signage and printed return envelopes without the period.

Thank you.
AlpheccaStarsAve. But I have seen it on signage and printed return envelopes without the period.
This is what I have also noticed. Grammatically, it should be "Ave." but, as you also pointed out, "Ave" is also common. Thanks.

No. It's a matter of personal choice or style guide rule, not grammar.
