Should I use the "that followed" in the second sentence?

Upon returning to the Solamnic fortress, Huma formed a band of twenty dragon riders to protect the stronghold from the armies of the Dark Queen. Of the original twenty, only nine survived the continuous battles that followed against the chromatic dragons, but the dragonlances allowed the knights to drive the dark forces back.
