Here are my sentences, I don't know which one I should use?
1. He became president of US at the beginning of twentieth century. 2. He becase thepresident of US at the beginning of twentieth century.
Should I use "the" in this situation? I somehow feel both of the two sentences are OK, but I am not sure about it. Anybody could explain to me precisely?
