Should I use reported speech? ('apologise for')

Hi, I'm supposed to finish second sentence so it means the same as the first.
I come up with two possible answers below and would like to know which one is correct.

1."I'm so sorry I damaged the vase," he said.
2. He apologised...

My answers:
He apologised that he had damaged the vase.
He apologised for damaging the vase.

Thx

Hello Guest Your second option is the right one: 'he apologised for damaging the vase'. Grammatical exercises seem to be littered with broken glass and china. What does that say about the psychology of grammarians, I wonder.
