Should I use Past Simple or Present Perfect in this sentence?

You don't look too well. Has something happened/Did something happen? Countless times I've heard Americans saying "Did something happen?", while my grammar book clearly specifies that it should be "Has something happened". The past simple form it's correct, then?

"Did something happen?" is OK, but "Has something happened?" is better.

A lot of times, Past Simple and Present Perfect can be used interchangeably.
