Should I use HAD or WAS?

Just a couple of weeks ago, she was living a normal life with her mother and sister.Now, she had no one left.

Is that ok for past tense, or would "Had been" be a better subsitute for was?

If your speaking point is the present: she was living -- now she has. If your speaking point is the past: she had been living -- then she had.
