Should I use 'grabbing' or 'to grab' in the sentence?

The pain was unbearable and he struggled hard _______(grab) hold of the branch of an old tree nearby.

Are both forms of verb fine to use? Thanks for advising, teachers! :"(

"in grabbing" is fine if the success of an action is preferred.

you could probably get away with grabbing if your put a comma before it.
