Should I use a singular or plural noun after "a kind of"?

Shuld I use a singular or plural noun after "a kind of" and "the kind of"?

e.g. Tigers are a kind of fierce animal/animals.
He is the kind of man/men who would fight for his belief.

I'm not sure, but I always use singular noun after "kind of".

For instance:
Tigers are a kind of c

a kind is singular.

A common error among native speakers: I don't like these kind of things should be:
I don't like this kind of things or I don't like these kinds of things

I understand that we should say "this kind of things" and "these kinds of things". But how about "the kind of"? Should we say "the kind of man" or "the kind of Men"?

One of the preceding answers got it right. "this kind of thing" - a singular "kind" has a singular "thing". "these kinds of things" - a plural "kinds" takes a plural "things"
