Should I use a comma?

I'm doing a essay for School and I need some help in I need to put a comma in the following sentences in my essay. Thanks!

1. The gospel according to mark forcuses on what Jesus did rather than what He said.
Should I put a comman before "rather"?

2. The Greek word is a compound of "mata" and "morphoo", meaning "to change into another form".
Should I put a comma before "and"?

3. God is beginning His spiritual rule on earth in the hearts of and among His people (John 14:23; 20:22)
Should I put a comma before "and"?

4. Jesus will remain faithful to God and overcome the power of evil and sin the world.
Should I put a comma before "and" (both of them)?

Thanks. Any help please!

Hello Anon

1. I think a comma helps. It points up the natural pause.

2. No, I wouldn't put a comma there.

3. I wouldn't myself, no.

4. I wouldn't put a comma in "the power of evil and sin in the world". The comma after "***" is optional. Read it out aloud to yourself: if you find you pause after "***", insert a comma!

Sorry I wrote these wrong. I post it in a hurry. Both "gospel" and " mark" is capitalize. Second It should be focuses. Third it should be "meta".

How about this one:

Signs and wonders are an authentic and important part of proclaiming the kingdom of ***.

Should a comma be place before the word "and".

Hi,

As to sentence 1, would you say if the writer of the sentence consider the underlined comparative element of the sentence to be important to the overall understanding of the sentence, leaving out the comma would serve the purpose better although allowing a "breathing" moment might serve another important purpose as well but would do so in a lesser degree.

Hello Anon

If you want to give "and important" the air of an afterthought or clarification, you can put commas round it. Otherwise, they're unnecessary.
