Should I say 'was still hoping' or 'still hoped,' 'was trying' or 'tried'?
Mommy had left us when I was seven. It had been 11 years since her disappearance. Daddy (was still hoping, still hoped) that she was alive, but I (was trying, tried) to forget her.
Both versions are correct in both cases, but I suggest that the contrast would be nicely emphasized if you used the continuous tense and then the simple tense. Daddy was still hoping that she was alive, but I tried to forget her. Others may have different opinions on this.
