Should I say ‘that is very true’ or ‘it is very true’?

Should I say ‘that is very true’ or ‘it is very true’? I want to write formally, so I think simply saying ‘very true’ is awkward.

“If one does not work hard and persevere,” Mr. Crosse said, “he will not succeed in life.” That is very true / It is very true. Patience is required of a person who wants to reach the pinnacle of success.

In formal writing, That (or This ) is very true would be preferable. You are referring to a specific statement. In informal writing, or in everyday speech, Very true would work.
