Should I say 'spend' or spending'?

Should I say 'spend' or spending'? My choice is the second one. Is it correct?

Rather than (spend, spending) several hours browsing different websites, take the time to study how to build a website of your own.

What if I rewrite the sentence in its natural order (Take the time...rather than....)? In that case, should I still use 'spending'?
