Should I say ‘lit up’ or ‘brightened up’ in the sentence?

Should I say ‘lit up’ or ‘brightened up’ in the sentence? My choice is ‘lit up.’ Is it correct? Is it also acceptable to say ‘brightened up’?

My girlfriend’s eyes lit up.
