Should I say 'had learned' or 'learned'?

Should I say 'had learned' or 'learned'? My personal choice is the first one, but is it correct? Please help me.


Ivan recalled that at the age of 10, he (had learned, learned) that his uncle had been murdered.

Example: When Sharon met John last December, John had (already) completed his Ph.D.
