Should I say 'effort' or 'efforts'?

Should I say 'effort' or 'efforts'? I think the first one is the correct choice. But I wonder why it may not be OK to say 'efforts' (plural) if the context suggests several attempts on the part of the subject. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

Jeff sincerely told his girlfriend Amy several times that he and her sister Anna were just friends. His explanations, however, proved a total waste of effort/efforts.
