Should I say 'converse' (present tense) or 'conversed' (past tense)? I think it should be 'converse.'

Should I say 'converse' (present tense) or 'conversed' (past tense)? I think it should be 'converse.'

Those Canadians instructed me to keenly observe how native speakers of English converse / conversed with one another.
