Should I say 'as' or 'for,' 'occurs' or 'happens'? My

Should I say 'as' or 'for,' 'occurs' or 'happens'? My choices are 'as' and 'happens.' Are these choices correct?

Teenage romance is temporary, (as, for) it (occurs, happens) only during a person’s years of self-exploration.
