Should I really put a comma before ‘that’ and after ‘1942’ in the sentence?

Should I really put a comma before ‘that’ and after ‘1942’ in the sentence? I notice that many writers use a comma after a year or date starting a sentence (as in, In 1940, my father died). Is that practice correct?

Grandpa has recently told me that, in 1942, his farmhouse somewhere in California was destroyed.
