Should I put these two questions together?

Hi teachers,
According to this paragraph?
What are you doing in my field, young man?’ she said.
Alex sat up quickly. ‘I’m sorry,’ he said.

Should I put these two questions together or separated as they are?
1. Did Alex apologize to the old woman? Yes, he did,
2. How do you know that? Because he said that he was sorry.

Thanks in advance.

I myself didn't, but I can estimate as to what others might think when faced with such questions; they would, possibly, doubt the oversimplicity.

Hi Surfer,
As I told you the students are adults. This exercise has to be done at home, not in class. Imagine, they arrive home after a working day, they have families too. Do they really have the strength t
