Should I make it "peoples"?

When the Cataclysm struck Krynn (the name of the world in this series), it completely devastated the lands and its people, and reshaped the entire world.

If entire nations were destroyed, then I suppose "peoples" is possible. Still , that's probably not what the author meant. Also, the plural "lands" would normally need "their", not "its",but this is probably allowed in a literary style.
