Should I leave a space between words and colons/semicolons

For punctuations such as colons and semicolons, what's the guideline to watch out when in regard to its format (spacing, maximum uses in a sentence, etc.)?
I've searched all over but to no avail.

There is no space before a colon, semicolon, period, comma, exclamation point, question mark, closing quotation mark, hyphen, m-dash, n-dash or interrobang. There is a space before an opening quotation mark. There is no space after an opening quotation mark, hyphen, m-dash, or n-dash.
