Should have Vs Would have

Is there a huge difference between the following two sentences?

1. I should have to make a trip to one of the shops to get the exact number of thumb drives.
2. I would have to make a trip to one of the shops to get the exact number of thumb drives.

I suppose, grammatically, both sentences are fine.

To me, the most immediately noticeable difference is that this sort of use of "should" is becoming uncommon in modern conversational English. In the UK, only older educated speakers are likely to use "I should have to". It may be used even less in the US.

  • Beyond that, I feel that if the purpose of the sentence is to explain how you can find out the exact number of thumb drives, then #2 is more appropriate.
  • If the purpose of the sentence is to explain what would happen in a particular situation then both can be used, subject to the earlier caveat.
