Pride and prejudiced
Chapter 2
Mrs Bennet: "Well, how pleased I am! And it is such a good joke, too, that you should have gone this morning, and never said a word about it till now."
Question
Should have is a past tense model used to show a lost opportunity or an action that doesn't happen in the past. My question is Mr Bennet had paid his visit to Mr Bingley why then Mrs Bennet used should have gone? What is the implication of this model verb here?
Thanks.
In the old-fashioned English of Jane Austen, should have also refers to an unexpected past opportunity that was actually taken, not lost. eg Lincoln became President, but he began life as a simple lawyer. That he should have become President was amazing.

In this case it's "evaluative should (have)", used when you want a way to express a judgment. It
