Should find a or the vowel first

I was helping my son who is in year 1 with his phonics.
I want to tell him that he should find a vowel first before he decode any word.
You should find a vowel or the vowel first in any word in order to sound them out correctly
Please explain the use of a or the before the noun vowel ( should find a or the Vowel)

A word can have more than just one vowel. "a vowel" suggests that "finding any vowel is enough to pronounce the word in question", which we know can't be right.


Using the, on the other hand, would make sense only if you already knew which vowel to look for (i.e. you have some previous context).
