Should everything be capitalised?

All I needed to hear was, ‘everything will be alright’, but it seemed that no one even cared whether I was dead or alive.

Should everything be capitalised?

Thanks.

Yes. It's a sentence in direct discourse because you quoted it. " I hate "alright," but I'm about the only one.

Use "all right."

I hate "alright," but I'm about the only one.

Should the comma after "was" be removed? Thanks.

Yes.

There's no grammatical need for a comma before the quotation. The subject must never be separated from the predicate of a sentence with a comma.

No, I think the rule is that the comma setting off the introductory clause trumps a period for the quote. I'm careless about following that rule myself.

So you mean the following sentence is acceptable, deadrat?

All I needed to hear was, "Everything will be all right." But it seemed that no one even cared whether I was dead or alive.
