Should be connected or separated

Hi. Please tell me if the underlined clauses and phrases can be separate elements without the need for the conjunction "and" to connect them, or they should be connected with "and." I think what I want to know is when you need to connect the clauses and phrases as those below or not. I think my question may be broad, too broad perhaps.
Any way, please help.

1. Forsaking everything he had, fleeing in the darkness of the night, he headed toward the raildroad station. 2.
2. Whatever he does, however he responds, he is going to stand his ground on this issue.

My broad reaction is that your sentences are fine, with a rather literary, dramatic, even oratorical tone. More mundane sentences, eg in a business report, would be better with 'and'. Clive

Hi. Thank you very much. I was reading your response and was wondering why there wasn't a conjunction before the word "even," when I think the conjunction "and" would normally be placed before it instead of a comma (even though I think both a comma and the conjunction "and," with the "and" coming after the comma, would be correct, too). Thank you for your help in advance.
