Should a full stop (period) be contained within quotation marks, or outside them?

Should a full stop (period) be contained within quotation marks, or outside them?

In the following sentence is the full stop in the correct location or should it be outside the quotes as the quotes are nested within a parent sentence?

Replacing guns with knives "could save our military a fortune" mentioned General Gueye, and will "allow us to operate with greater stealth."

In the US, inside, always. In the UK, inside if it's a complete sentence inside the quote. I don't know how they handle a broken quote (with the "he said" in the middle).
