Shoud've

On Friday I was supposed to go to Ellen's but she cancelled.

Can I say "I should've gone" instead of "was supposed to" in this sentence without changing its meaning?

Top answer

Loosely, yes. Context could determine a more appropriate choice. 'Should've does not work well here: On Friday I was supposed to go to Ellen's, because my father commanded me to do so, but she cancelled.
