Shot at


Is the following sentence fine? I mean to write the words 'shot at' at the end of the sentence might be incorrect. Please comment.
They claimed the soldiers had innocently strayed into the rebel territory and been shot at.

It's very likely fine. If the shots were fired in their direction, but they did not hit them, then they were shot AT. If the shots DID hit them, then leave out the at.

The sentence is fine and is nothing to worry about. There's nothing in it to wonder at.

The bank was robbed and the safes were broken into.
We bought the bed that Washington slept in.
That was the exact same idea that I was thinking of.
I have no idea where he got that money from.

It's a good sentence, but I would say "had been shot at". Parallel events.
