Grammar

shorten/short; clothing/cloth

take sth up (CLOTHING) phrasal verb
to shorten a piece of clothing, such as a skirt or trousers.

I would have written the highlighed parts as, "To short a piece of cloth". I wonder why "shorten" and "clothing" has been used instead of "short" and "cloth" respectively.
