Shortening sentences

Hi,

I want to shorten this sentence, so please let me know:

I was only asleep for an hour. My friend had been asleep for eight hours.

Is it possible to shorten this sentence like this: I was only asleep for an hour; my friend, for eight hours.

Is it okay? Is punctuation fine?

Thanks,
Ele
