shortened question expression

Which is correct in general?

For what - What for ?
About what - What about?
and so on.

I mean in which order should I place the preposition and the question word?

I am not just talking about ''what'' ,all question words included.

Top answer

I am not just talking about what ,all question words included. The question is vague, so there is no simple single answer, but if the preposition precedes, it is generally more formal.

It seems to me that "For what?" is mostly used when expressing regret about wasted effort.
