Shorten

"The tree branch shortens."

Does shorten work as an intransitive verb?

Thanks

g. "the days are shortening", "the odds shortened", but "the tree branch shortens" sounds odd to me. I can't visualise the situation it is referring to.

It can be instransitive in some cases, e.g. "the days are shortening", "the odds shortened", but "the tree branch shortens" sounds odd to me. I can't visualise the situation it is referring to.
