shortage/inadequacy/scarcity/shortening

There's this task:
Seasonal affective disorder Emotion: sad is clearly a response to the .......... of daylight hours and the lack of sunlight in winter.

The answer to it is shortening. Could you please explain it to me why the other options are wrong?

"shortage" and "scarcity" make it sound rather as if daylight hours are goods or commodities, like potatoes, or coal, or toilet paper, or whatever. "inadequacy" can give the impression that the daylight hours themselves are individually not satisfactory, rather than that there are not enough of them.
