Short-term/long-term memory

Sometimes when I've learned something a while ago I forget it and then say I say that I have a short-term memory. But is it so?
Also when I ask a person's name I instantly forget it.

In which instance is the short memory at fault? When I can't remember a person's name outside of 30 seconds or when I can't remember what I've learned yesterday because I probably forgot it right after I've learned it and already didn't have it with me when I had to remember it.

Give an example of a short term and long term memory in real life situation.

Short term memory is used for the immediate moment like to remember a phone number to dial or someone's name at a party. It could be for a few minutes or up to a couple of days. Long term memory is for things you learn and need to know like the steps in a process or the meanings of vocabulary words you'll use as you become educated in a certain field.

  • If you struggle as much as you indicate in your question, you might want to consider seeing a doctor to find out if there is something causing your lack of memory.

Thanks for your reply, but doctors are utter tools, at least where I live, the problem is not my memory but my chronic ennui. Since telling people that you have no interest in them would offended them, I lie and say that it must be my short memory.
