Short-sleeved shirt

Hi

I'd appreciate some help with the following

I often see short-sleeved shirt and short-sleeve shirt. Are both OK? Is one British and the other American?

Also I see

short-sleeve weather and short-sleeves weather. Again are both OK and do they need the hyphen?

Thanks

You will indeed find all these versions- though of the first pair 'short sleeved shirt' is probably the most common form [as you see the hyphen is not necessary- such things are more the policies of different publishers than rules of English]. For the second pair, both seem okay- but the second sounds better to me [weather for short sleeves], but that may be personal!

Here are the numbers of instances in COCA (a reputable AmE corpus) and Google hits respectively:

short-sleeved shirt — 79; 3,690,000

short-sleeve shirt — 26; 20,100,000

short-sleeve weather — 2; 99,500

short-sleeves weather — 0; 11,100

I suggest that only the last is unacceptable (as is usual: nouns used as adjectives normall
