You could also describe an exclamation as a sudden and emphatic utterance. In the context of an essay, I' d tend to see it as something that is intended to surprise or startle the reader and thus gain his full attention.
eg In an essay on Shakespeare, you might begin by saying 'Shakespeare was a second-rate writer!'
