Short para on Machiavelli

Hi, this is a short para part of my history paper on The Prince, I would really appreciate it if someone could read it over. Its interesting and increases your history knowledge! Thanks alot.

The Renaissance is characterized by series of ideals and beliefs that sets it apart from the Middle Ages. These ideals include the resurrection of classical text and ideas, the rise of the humanism and the growing emphasis on secularism. All three of the characteristics listed can be found in the pages of The Prince. Reading ancient texts is nothing new for the Renaissance period. In fact, this trend started with the medieval scholars who studied them in their monasteries. What differs the Renaissance way and the medieval way is how these ancient texts were used. The Renaissance readers imitated the actions of the ancient people while the medieval scholars merely understood them. This difference can be clearly seen in The Prince, which is mostly based on Machiavelli’s continuous study of the ancient world. Machiavelli’s ideas in the book are there because the politicians in the ancient world have already used them with much success. He knows that these ideas are effective so he tells his readers to do the same to achieve their goals. His many historical examples are not there only to reinforce his points but also give a detailed description of the actions of these great men so that one can closely imitate them when the occasion arises. The past, Machiavelli says, should be studied by a prince “so that he can do what eminent men have done before him (Machiavelli 49).” If “Alexander the Great imitated Achilles and Caesar imitated Alexander (Machiavelli 49)” to achieve their greatness, why can’t the Renaissance men do the same?
