Short memory

How would you say this please? This is most probably not factually correct but how would you say it please?

Cats have short memories of 1 year it seems like. They only remember things a year old away. Anything beyond /further, they can't remember or it seems that way at least.

Cats have short memories. They can only remember things a year from the moment they were born. Anything beyond, they can't remember or it seems that way at least.
