Short it out

Hi

Three youngs (Mira, Adam, Kai) try to escape a place where is surrounded by electrified fence. Mira asks Adam what to do and Adam throws a wrench at the fence shouting "short it out".

I know what "short out" means but I can't get it in the context that I provide. What exactly "short it out" means?
