Short answers to past perfect questions

Could the auxilliary "did" be used in answering a past perfect question?
Eg. Had you left your books in the car when you entered the class?
Yes, I had / Yes I did.
Are both answers possible?
Thanks

I don't know if there are any 'news' I've missed about usage, since I don't live in an English-speaking country, but: "Yes, I had" is the grammatically correct answer to that question. "Did" is the auxiliary of the simple past.
