Only #1 for shopping. It may be made of anything from polythene to gabardine. A polythene bag needn't be used for shopping, though that is common.

It's not a matter of 'correct' - I'm sure we could hear all permutations - but I only find 'shopping bag' familiar and common.

Actually I asked because I know people use the term "shopper" term "shopping bag" in some places. For instance, have a look http://www.google.com/search?q=%22shopper+bag%22&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=711

Hi,

3: polythene bag

I never hear this, but the term 'plastic bag' is extremely common. It's the standard bag that you get in N. America when they give you a bag in a store.

In Canada now, they charge you for them.

'A shoppng bag' sounds like a (non-plastic) bag you bring to the store youself.
